This is the default behavior when working with templates (*.xlt).

If you're opening a template, then this is the way it should work.

If you're working with plain old workbooks, then maybe ...

Does this happen when you open a *.xls file by doubleclicking on it in windows
explorer? If you shift-rightclick on the file (in windows explorer), you'll see
a bunch of options.

There should be an Open and a New included in that list. The bolded option is
the action that happens when you double click on that file.

My bet is you have New bolded. It should be Open.

If that's true, try this:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

You right,I have NEW bolded.
But the procedure did not work.
The installer asks for the souce disk, but does not find the files needed on
it.
I have Excel 2000 SP3,could be on SP1,2,or 3 ?
Anyway tank You for the help.

You could try this.

Open windows explorer
Tools|Folder options|file types tab
scroll down to xls Microsoft Excel Worksheet
select it
click the advanced button
click on Open
and then click the "set default" button.

Thank You Dave
This time worked fine.
