what can i do to eliminate this annoying pop-up dialog
box in Microsoft Word 2002 every that I merely open a
document exclusively for purposes of securing a copy of
it?
I have been going through all the tedium of clicking "no"
over and over again for at least 10 years when performing
this task, and I am unaware of any "changes" that I make
merely by opening the document for purposes of copying.

Hi there,

You must be doing something more than merely selecting and copying.

If I :

Open an existing document;
Select some text (or all of it);
Do CTRL-C to copy the selection onto the clipboard;
Close the document;
Open a new one;
Do CTRL-V to copy from the clipboard;
etc.

I am never asked to save my original document. It closes quietly without a
word!

Have I understood what you are trying to do/your situation?

Hi Suzanne,

I'll have to remember that one! Especially since I turn off everything that
has to do with Smart tags... And they keep coming back somehow! I hate the
little things!

But the OP wrote that he/she has been dealing with this for ten years...
Aren't smart tags new to XP or 2000?

I've experienced the same for some files since Excel 95 (or before). I may
get the question if I want to save even if I just open a file and close it
again, or exit Excel.

Probably due to some automatic correction performed without the users
permission. However, if I click [Yes], I may still get the question the next
time the file is opened, glanced at, and closed. WEIRD!

The insidious thing about Smart Tags is that they insinuate themselves into
your existing files. But if he's been having the problem for years, it may
be that the prompt is caused by Update Fields, another common culprit.

As for the original question, wouldn't it have been better to simply save
the document as a template to easily produce copies of it, using file > new?
