Hi,

Recently whenever I click on links to downloadable files in IE6 (.zip,
..exe etc), I do not get the normal "Save As" dialog box that you
normally get. Instead, looking at my traffic monitor, the file
downloads...but into the cache. I then have to go searching through
all the files in there to pull out the download. Can anyone tell me
how to re-enable the dialog box? I'm using Windows XP Home.

Thanks,

CM

Sorry, I probably didn't explain that well. It's not when I right
click on a link - it's when I left click on a link. Up until a week or
so ago, when I did this, a dialog box would come up asking where I
wanted to save the file & what I wanted to name it. Now it doesn't...&
I want to get it back. If I right click, the Save Target As option is
there, but I don't want to use it. Can anyone help?

Hi,

Supposing we are *NOT* talking about HTM/HTML files (why would anyone like
to have the left-click to ask to save those), start Windows Explorer, Tools,
Folder Options, File Types, (the file type you ware talking about - ZIP or
anything else), Advanced, check [x] Confirm open after download.

Kind regards

Hi,

No, it's not htm files - .zip, .rar, .exe...basically any filetype at
all. I had already checked that setting out - all the filetypes are
already checked, so the problem must lie elsewhere.

Has no one got any other ideas as to how I can fix this problem?
There's no point in me using IE if I can't download stuff with it.

Hi Martin,

You posted this before. My response to it was:

In other words, the commans are available. It is LEFT CLICKING on a
link that is the problem. Anyone else?

I have this same issue on one of my systems, however, I
don't think Martin's suggestion doesn't describe Chris'
or my problem.

The issue is that when downloading a file, normally you
see a "File Download" dialog box that gives you the
option to "Open", "Save", or "Cancel". This box never
appears. The file downloads to the TIF folder and you
must root through the folder to find it or do a search
for the file name (assuming you know it) - not an easy
task for a novice.

Any other suggestions?

Hi Steve,

Yes, that article describes the problem exactly. The only thing is,
the main filetype that it affects on my PC (.exe), does not have an
entry under My Computer as the article says that other filetypes will
have (that I can see anyway). There is a link on this article for
"Internet Explorer Opens .exe Files Instead of Downloading Them", but
it only applies to IE v4.0 & below. Does anyone know how to set the
"Always Ask Before Opening" checkbox for a .exe file?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,
That does present a bit of a problem with this solution doesn't it? There
should be a way to cure this problem. Even though it says, not for IE 4.0
and later, I think that MSKB 140991 might be pointing in the right
direction. Open regedit and navigate to \HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe and report
back with what's there (including any subkeys).

If you're not comfortable using regedit, you may not want to do this. For
now be very careful not to change anything.
