In my previous version of Word, when I was renaming a
document with another name my default to be prompted for
the document properties worked. In Office 2003 this does
not work, it only works when you are saving an brand new
document. How can I get the prompt for document
properties to work using the "save as"?

Hi garfield-n-odie,

I have the same problem as Charlotte. Even when I follow your instructions,
it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?
Carla

You don't get the prompt except when you initially save a new, unsaved
document. If you Save an existing document or Save As under another name,
you will not be prompted.

If you're using a document as a de facto template, then you can get around
this (in Word 2002 and 2003) by using the New: From existing document option
in the New Document task pane. This uses your document as a template but
creates a new Document# just as if you had created a new file based on a
genuine template, which has the double benefit that (a) you can't
unintentionally save a new document over an old one and (b) you will be
prompted for document Properties when you save.

Does Word 2002 and 2003 have the old fashioned way of finding the properties
page?
File, Properties.

Yes, although I've added a toolbar button to go directly to the Properties
dialog because I use it frequently.

Thank you Suzanne for trying to help. However, I still can't get the
properties to pop up when I do "save as" or make a new document in Word.
It's funny because it does work with Excel. Maybe it's a glitch in XP?
Also, with Windows 98, if I would hold my mouse pointer over a document in
the Window Explorer I was able to see the properties. Not anymore with XP, I
just see file type + size. Any ideas if these problems may be connected?
Thanks very much.
Carla

Of course you can't get the Properties to pop up when you Save As! As I
stated, the prompt works only the first time you save a previously unnamed
document. There is no workaround for this except (a) using the New: From
existing document option in the New Document task pane or (b) opening File |
Properties manually and setting the properties. What Excel does is
irrelevant here. What Word used to do is also irrelevant. This is the way
Word works now.

As for Windows Explorer, I get a popup in Windows 2000, but the hover time
before getting it seems longer than I remember. You can, also, BTW, get
Explorer to display a column for any desired property: right-click on any
column heading (in Details view) and choose the columns you want displayed
(More... lists a huge variety).
