Is there any type of adapter available that will enable me to put a new
SATA hard drive in an older PC that pre-dates SATA?

I understand that I might sacrifice some performance which is OK as long
as it works.

Hi,
I have one from Promise, an SATA150 controller with 2 SATA connectors(ONE
drive per connector, mind you) and a standard ATA 133 connector. It works
fine in XP Pro with my Seagate 120gig drive. I have a Plll 933. The SATA
drive has no jumpers to set.
