SATA converter?

I'm getting a SATA hard drive anyway... the specs say you can connect
DVD drives and make them SATA... so it worht me getting on efor this
purpose?

It sort of isn't worth the bother so buy a converter card unless you are
so in love with your current MB that you can't stand to part. ATA133
is alive and well but the marketing types would have you thinking ATA is
for dinosaurs. The fastest data rate that I have seen for SATA is
1.5Mbps which is close to the MBs of an ATA. If you feel you just have
to spend the money upgrade your MB to one that supports both ATA and
SATA. Sometimes a new MB can be worth the bother just for a new BIOS
that sees all the new toys it can hook up and play with.

Will a Standard IDE device be accessible to a basic operating system without
the use of a driver file?

I would be wary of making drives inaccessible for recovery or utility
purposes.

Just think that an SATA drive must have a driver loaded before it is
accesible to XP, but what of the ability to access the SATA device if only
running off a boot disk to restore or format etc?

all new mobo BIOS will recognize SATA drive and DOS or whatever you use will
asign drive letter.
you will need drivers for RAID or cheap atermarket SATA card
