Lately when I turn on my printer, I immediately get an icon in the notification
tray called "Safely Remove Hardware." When I click on it there is a window with
(only) my printer listed and instructions to "Select the device you want to
unplug or eject and then click Stop. When Windows notifies you that it is safe
to do do, unplug the device from your computer."
Have I done something to cause this to happen? I have no desire to "remove" my
printer. How can I "undo" whatever it is that is causing this?

The 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon just offers you the facility to unload
device drivers before unplugging a device. It usually only appears for
hardware such as external storage devices, network cards etc. where it is
recommended that the device is unloaded from Windows rather than just being
unplugged or turned off.

The icon is not trying to tell you that you should remove the hardware or
need to remove the hardware, just offering the safest way of doing so. I
would have thought it was unusual for a Printer to be listed, but it's not
actually a problem. Just ignore the icon.
