I have had the Safely Remove Hardware Icon in my System
Tools area (bottom right by the clock) running ever since
I installed my cable modem. I don't want to Safely remove
my Cable modem. I do not know why this is here every time
I start up windows. Today, I actually went through the
process on uninstalling my cable modem and reinstalling
it. The Safely Remove Hardware Icon is still there. Any
help in getting rid of it?

Right-click on your Taskbar and select:
Properties > Customize, then right-click
on the "Safely Remove Hardware" entry,
select "always hide" from the pull-down
menu, then click OK.

Thanks Nicholas. I am also concerned why it is running.
Any idea? I'd like to find out why and stop it, not just
hide it. Is that possbile?

Thanks, Ron

If you have usb hardware plugged in I don't believe it is possible to get
rid of this icon without unplugging the hardware. The best you can do is
hide it.

The point if it is in dealing with USB connections, in particular, where
you can physically pull the plug at any moment, but might do damage if
data transfers were in progress. So it provides for ensuring that all
is safe. You can't get rid of it - but can hide it. R-click an empty
bit of Taskbar, Properties. Check 'Hide Inactive Icons' and click
Customise. Click to the right of it in the behaviour column and select
'Always hide', then Apply out.
