Does anyone know how to remove the Safely Remove Hardware
icon from the taskbar? My system's slowed down a lot
since I attached a USB ASDL modem, and the icon
appeared.. probably no connection, but I'd like to get
rid of it!
There isn't a connection, except that this always appears if you have
such USB devices, so as to allow you to terminate processes that may be
transferring data before pulling the plug. You can hide it - r-click in
the Task bar, Properties, check 'Hide unused icons. , Customise and next
to the entry, in the Behaviour column, select 'Always Hide'.
The ADSL modem may need upgraded (or at least different) drivers. As you
are in the UK you need ones described as for 'PPPoA' not 'PPPoE' which
is what the system may have installed - certainly if it offered an
upgrade. If it is one of the green Alcatel 'manta ray' ones, the site
is
http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/support.htm
and the top section 'for ISDN'. The 'newest' version are the topmost,
2.0.1 ones, but the third down, release 1.6 worked well for me when I
used one a year ago
