The safely remove hardware that usually detects remote usb drives is
detecting the hard drive that is not external. I tried to customize it so
that it would be hidden but it is not inactive so it will not go away. Do I
need to uninstall the usb driver to fix this or .....

Some sata controlers will show a connected drive in the 'safely remove'
Perhaps something to do with 'hot swap'?

As I said, may be a feature of the controler the hd is connected to.
Doesnt matter that its a new install/new pc
Perhaps tell us the mobo/pc and if sata drive

Im sorry, the mother board is a A8N-SLI premium by Asus, the Hard drive is a
300 gig Maxtor and the processor is a AMDX2 4200 and yes it is a sata drive.
This computer is working fine and the "safely remove" works when I plug in
my camera, but if it shouldn't look as if it were active in the tray, I would
prefer it not to be. Thank you for your help so far.

I had the 'safely remove' when I had a sata plugged into a nvidea mobo
controler, since this controler supports hot swap I believe that is why
