Safe to format partition?

I have a partitioned hard drive, and use one of these
partitions for storage. However, having moved everything
off that partition, I was surprised to see about 10GB of
used space still being reported, despite there not
seeming to be any files or folders on the partition. What
I wanted to know is what this used space could be, and -
more importantly - whether it would be safe to format
this (non-active) partition?

Thanks,
George.

Open Windows Explorer or My Computer and go to Tools > Folder Options > View
tab. To see files normally hidden by the operating system (so users won't
accidentally delete or alter them) click on 'Show hidden files and
folders'.

I'd already tried that, but nothing had shown up.
However, I have been able to track down the cause of the
problem - apparently I'd left System Restore turned on
for that partition, and there were about 10GB of restore
points going unnoticed. So, problem solved.

Sequoia View is an excellent free and clean utility for tracking down
mysterious missing drive space.

It gives a one window graphical representation of which files are taking up
how much room where on a given drive. (including files Windows is reluctant
to reveal)

It's even kind of fun to use. :)
