Is there any way I can set up Outlook 2000 running on Win98 to recieve
messages ONLY from those that are in my address book/Contacts? I have seen
this option in Hotmail and it seems like a good cheap one to eliminate some
of the extraneous mail. I can set up a rule that will filter out anyone
except those in a distribution list and then copy everyone into that
distribution list. However, that would never automatically update itself if
I added someone to my address book, or could it? There must be some way!
Thanks.

Think of the problem in reverse. Rather than thinking about including
everyone in your address book to get their messages, instead trash,
delete, or move all messages from everyone *except* those in your
address book(s).

Apply this rule after receiving the message
move to Junk folder (or delete or whatever you want)
except if sender is in <address book>
stop processing more rules

Microsoft doesn't allow you to specify multiple address books (i.e.,
contact folders in Outlook). So if you have N address books then you
will need N "keep if known sender" rules, one for each address book.
Also remember that for a contacts-type folder to be included in Outlook
Address Book (to let you select it in the rule), you have to right-click
on the contacts-type folder and add it to Outlook Address Book (which is
not an address book itself but a compendium of every contacts-type
folder you decided to include under it).

That's great! Thanks.

I somehow seem to be missing a critical step in this process when it comes to
except if sender is in <address book>
When I get to the exceptions list the only one close to that is "except if from people or distribution list". Is that the one? When I chose that and click on the hyperlink I am taken into the address book. At that point I can select individuals or everyone present. However, down the road, when someone else gets added to the address book/contact list their names won't be added to the exception list unless I specifically go and add them. Is there some way of specifying the entire contact list?

Nope. You would have to compile a huge list of everyone in all your
address books (i.e., contact-type folders) which would be a static list
so it nevers gets updated after you added someone in your address book
until you manually edited to rule to include that new contact. You need
the clause that says:

except if sender is in <specified> Address Book

I am using OL2002. You are using OL2000. You sure this clause is not
listed? If not then its a clause not available in a version of Outlook
prior to version 2002.

The above is the exact text used to define the exception clause. When I
posted earlier, it was from memory. However:

except if sender is in <address book>

should have been sufficiently similar for you to figure out it was:

except if sender is in <specified> Address Book

You're supposed to be able to do some cogitation on your own. Even if I
had said, "Use the clause that says 'except if in address book'" then
you should've been able to figure out which one to use. Also note that
there is no clause matching "move to Junk folder (or delete or whatever
you want)". That was descriptive, not verbatim.

If OL2000 doesn't have this exception clause or you are unable to
determine which one it is then you can't use it.
