Hello,

I just got XP home version and I need to troubleshoot
before next steps of removing a virus from my system.

However, I must start in safe mode to do this - but after
tapping the F8 key immediately after turning on the
computer and the screen dims and displays the 'blue'
startup menu - There is NO apparent option for safe mode
defaulted at the top of the menu or anywhere to select
it. There is only the floppy drive, a coded selection (of
letters and numbers) and the cd rom drive to choose from.

If anyone has advice on how to start XP in safe mode, I
would love to hear it.

Thanks,
Melissa

If you have another XP machine you can make a boot floppy by doing the
following:

Format a floppy in GUI mode, dont quick format
Copy NTLDR, ntdetect.com, boot.ini
Modify the boot.ini to have the following additional parameter:
/safeboot:minimal after the /fastdetect line
Boot the machine from the floppy
