cheers Wes. Yeah, i always run spyware scans etc. in safe mode. but i
recently formatted my harddrive as i just went on my school summer holidays
:-D, but my system still runs extremely slow.
specs:
P4 2.4GHz
256ram + 512ram = 768mb
40GB HD
radeon 9000 graphics

The following can slow a system:
- failing hard drive (mouse sticks during sector retries)
- overheating -> thermal protection
- overclocking etc. -> slower UIDE mode due to errors
- disabled processor cache
- no pagefile, or slow pagefile
- underfootware, e.g. multiple av, malware, etc.
- peripherals flooding the PC with requests; test without
- incessant network traffic; test off networks
The following will crash a PC at full speed:
- bad RAM
- bad SVGA
- bad motherboard caps
also, there is another option similar to safe mode but says something about
loading microsoft drivers?? please could u shed some light on this mode

I'm not being mean; I can't recall the details ;-)
AFAIK this runs normal mode but with Safe Mode's driver listing.
Set it to do less work. That's the nature of defrag; hard work now,
so that when you use the PC, it's quicker. You may find the law of
diminishing returns sets in, where intense settings are doubling the
defrag time but give only a 1% speed boost.
What works better than even the smartest defrag, is a small lean C:
with all the large, seldom-used stuff (e.g. 100G movie and music
collections, etc.) stored in a different HD volume.
That way, 95% of your head travel can be kept within the first 10G of
HD, so no matter how fragged that busy volume is, head travel is
seldom more than the first 10G of the drive.
