user says when he launches powerpoint (via a doc or from
the start menu) he gets the message: "powerpoint has
encountered an error the last time it opened. Do you want
to start powerpoint in safe mode?" He chooses yes and it
ends up freezing up. User says Word is un-effected.

.
matt Again - misunderstood user - he does not freeze but
is in Powerpoint "Safe Mode".

And then what does he do and what happens? Does he go to Help > About > and
click on "Disabled Items"? Is anything disabled? Does he also go to Help >
Detect and Repair? Finally, when he closes PowerPoint and opens it again,
does it open normally?

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

If you are running PowerPoint 2003, there's a possibility that you might be
running into a problem that has been reported when launching PowerPoint on
systems where some adware/spyware software has been installed.
