safe mode doesnt work?

On my windows xp when i select safe mode it just gives me a long list of directories and does not let me do anything. I need to use safe mode to re-enable my monitor!!! arg.
 
Sometimes it will take a long time for the directory listings to exit and
the Safe Mode screen to appear. This may have something to do with a
existing Windows problem that you may or may not know that you have. Try to
wait it out. Jym

What do you mean, list of directories?
It should be a list of options, which you can select using the up and
down keys on your keyboard.
Try pressing F8 on boot, and in the screen that appears, press the
down and up keys and read the text that is selected.
