S video out not working from laptop

I have a new dell 700m with an s video out port and an intel 82855 gme
graphics controller. i am trying to use the dual monitor function to show
the laptop screen on the tv through s video. i used to do this through my
desktop so i know the tv can handle it. its a relatively new sony. when i
go into the display page in the control panel the tv show up as monitor two
but when i select it nothing shows up on tv. Any ideas?
