I have a Win XP update disc I bought when the OS came
out, I bought a new computer a year ago with XP
preinstalled, last week my computer started running real
slow. The boot up time is fine, but it takes 55 to 60
seconds to open a folder or start the WMP and IE. I was
wondering if I could reinstall with my old Win XP upgrade
disc. I am rumming a P4 2.0 with 512 MB RAM, a creative
Augity card, and a GeForce 3 card, all drivers are
updated and I've done a system defrag and cleaned out any
un-needed files, but it did not make a difference. I
want to see if I can re-install without losing all my
files. Thanx!! :)

Tier;
You probably do not want to use that CD with this computer.
If you do, it will be bound to this computer and you can not have it
installed on another computer.

See if these help your problems:
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
