I can't seem to find anything anywhere about the problem I'm experiencing.
What has happened over the past week is that each time I carry out a program
command, and an 'OK/Yes/No/Cancel' pop up window opens, all (or in some cases
some) of the associated text in the same box appears as question marks. i.e.
'???? ? ???'

As I said I can't find anything about what causes this or how to rectify it.
Can anyone help?

Possibly a damaged system font file. Do you run Windows MUI (different
language interface) at all?

I've tried reinstalling the MUI but it hasn't made any difference. I did
notice in Windows Startup Inspector a file called ATIPRB that sits in the
Windows Fonts Directory. According to the comments it is added as a result
of the DVLDR virus. (In addition to using AVG to scan inward and outward
emails I run a full AVG system scan daily and use Microsoft Antispyware, so
don't understand how I got it). I've excluded it from start up but the
problem still exists. Do you have any other ideas?

No. I'd try Microsoft Support or Dr Gui:
