Runtime Errors When Switching Users

Evidently this is not a well known issue, because the help so far hasn't been
very helpful - :)

I'm hoping someone out there has run into this similar situation.

1. I have 2 users setup, one for me, one for my wife - we're both Admin Users.

2. This is a brand new Dell PC running XP Media. It came with McAfee
Security Center and does have the Google Toolbar (I saw posts referring to
these earlier, but honestly don't think they are the issue).

3. I loaded Office 2003 (just Word, Excel and Powerpoint)

4. I also ran the Home Network wizard to setup printer sharing.....(and I
believe this is when the problem started).

Here's the deal.

1. If I log in my account, I can run everything fine.

2. If my wife then logs in, she can't run anything, not IE, not Windows
Explorer, can't even open the blasted Control Panel.

The error message for any attempt to do anything is:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!

Program: c:\windows\xxxxx.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

That's it, no further details.

3. Now here's the interesting part.

IF I log out of all my programs and then switch to her account, I can run
any app fine, but then if I switch back to my acct, I get the same runtime
errors.

To me it sounds like a system file sharing issue - but am not sure how to
resolve.

Looking for the MS guru who has the answer to this problem.

I don't think you'll find many "MS gurus" here. This is a peer-to-peer
public newsgroup hosted on Microsoft servers. While some MS employees
occasionally pop in, the majority of regular helpers (like me) are
volunteers who do not work for the company.

Have you created a third user profile yet? If not, please do so and make
it a Computer Administrator. Then see if it behaves properly. If it
does, use it for your wife and delete the one she is now using.

OK, so making a new user account didn't work so now we know that this
isn't a case of user account corruption. Since I can't see your
computer, I can only give you some general suggestions of how to
troubleshoot this.

First please answer this question - on reading through your first post
again, I see that you refer to the Network Setup Wizard and
file/printer sharing. However, your post reads like the problems you
are having are on a local computer with local accounts. What is really
going on here and what does networking have to do with it? Remember
that I cannot see your computer(s) and network (if any) from here and
you have to be descriptive. Did you run the Network Setup Wizard when
you only have one computer?

1. Look in Event Viewer and see if there are any clues.
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

If there are a lot of warnings and/or failures, write down the details
and either post the information here and/or Google it.

2. If there is nothing in Event Viewer that looks useful, back up your
data and do a clean install of Windows. Refer to Dell's instructions re
how to restore your computer to factory condition. After the machine is
back to it was when you got it, make user accounts for you and your
wife but don't install any software.

See how each user account behaves, making notes. If each account behaves
correctly, then 1) make a System Restore point and 2) install one
application. Test the behavior of the application in each account.

I will wait to hear back from you with the answers to my questions in
the first paragraph before going further with this.
