I can't get xp to load. I'm getting a runtime error message.
program:\??\c:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe. This problem started after
updating to service pack 3. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Does uninstalling SP3 via Add/Remove Programs resolve the behavior?

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed SP3?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of SP3?

Try booting from the XP cd-rom and choose the option :

To repair a Windows XP installation using
Recovery Console, press R.

Then, use the 'copy' command to copy the file

c:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\winlogon.exe

to your 'system32' directory, thus :

copy c:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\winlogon.exe c:\WINDOWS\system32

....this will ensure that, at least, the valid SP3 file 'winlogon.exe' is
present and correct.

Type EXIT to close the 'Recovery Console' and reboot the machine.
