Running without sound in XP - how come?

I am running a dual boot - WinME and WinXP. The sound works great for
ME but does not work for XP. I am not sure what to do about this.

I have an ASUSP5P800 board. I have downloaded the drivers and yet it
still alludes why I am not getting the sound I want. It also gives me
a conflict or the YELLOW (!) beside the multimedia device.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I went into the control panel into audio properties and everything is
greyed out and unchangeable.

I don't have an audio icon in the bottom right hand corner either.

What should I do now?

The drivers you downloaded (from where? you should only get them from
Asus for your specific model motherboard) apparently are not the
correct ones for your motherboard for XP. Since this is onboard sound,
if Asus doesn't have XP drivers for the sound the easiest workaround is
to simply purchase a PCI sound card. You can get a basic sound card for
under $20USD. Disable the onboard sound in the BIOS and use the PCI
card in both ME and XP.
