Can this be done? That is, if my copy of Excel is on the computer downstairs,
can I run it from up here--on Windows XP Home? Pro?

No. Unless a program is specifically written to run over a network it will
not, with the exception of some very simple programs. Excel is not such a
program.

Use a Remote Desktop solution (XP Pro only), or use a freeware product like
UltraVNC <http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/>, and you can control it from your
computer, but it will still run on the computer that it's installed on. Your
computer will be a thin client.
