Hi,
Sleep now is a hybrid of the old standby and hibernate. It copies the
contents of memory to disk and goes into a low power state. If you want
programs to continue running, do not use sleep unless the program has the
capacity to bring the system out of sleep in order to run (certain tasks,
such as autoscanning by antivirus programs or defragging are programmed for
this).
In XP you would have used standby, not hibernate, to allow programs to
continue running. In Vista, simply leave the system on with your power
options set to go into low power state after a period of inactivity. This
way when your programs complete, the system will automatically go to sleep
but not until then.
