Running program in the background

I can hear my PC running some program in the background.....this goes on for
more than an hour. How can I positively identify what it is and stop it?

Task Manager [ctrl+alt+del] - Processes tab. What process(es) occupy the most CPU time?

Thanks. I suppose I need to look at that when I hear the background program
running...because that program has stopped running and all cpu's are at zero.

Click twice on the CPU column header to sort the list of processes in
descending order based on CPU usage. That will make it easier to spot
what it using the most CPU time.
