I have recently bought a new computer with Windows NT & Works 8 installed. I
have transferred files from my old computer but things like Access datbases
for instance won't run. Windows 97 and ME were pre-in stalled on my old
computer. Will I have to buy Access/Excell etc and instal them on my new
computer or is thee a way round this?

Yes, you'll need to purchase and install Access/Excel or a Microsoft Office
program that includes Access and Excel.

Excel and Access were never part of any Windows version. These were separate
applications or part of the Office software suite. It appears that an Office
suite was installed on your ME PC before. If you do not have the Office
install CD, then you may need to buy it again (unless the OpenOffice package
works for you.)

BTW: I hope you bought Windows XP and not Windows NT! Windows NT 4 has
been "retired" from Microsoft support and it is unlikely that you will find
new software that will work with it.

NT? Are you sure you don't mean Windows XP?

Not unless you have Access installed.

If you want to use Access, Excel, or any other programs, you need to install
them on your new computer. You can either install them them from your old
Microsoft Office CD, if you have one, or buy another copy of it.
