You can't run explorer.exe using RunAs. I think you'll need to log in as a
local admin.

Nicolas,

You can try doing this using Internet Explorer instead of explorer.exe.

[1] Right-click on Internet Explorer, and select runas from the context menu.
[2] Enter the credentials of the administrator or a user account with
administrator privileges, and click OK.
[3] When Internet Explorer starts up, type in the path to the parent of the
folder you wish to modify as though you were using explorer.exe; e.g.
"C:\Files"

You should now be able to modify the permissions.

Regards,

Patrick

Nicolas,

Rather than using the file explorer GUI, it sounds like you should be using
the Windows cacls.exe command-line tool. You can use runas to run cacls.exe
under a different account. The following are some examples of using cacls.exe:

[1] To see the help for this command:
cacls.exe /?

[2] To add full control to the user domain1\user1 for the folder c:\Files:
cacls.exe c:\Files /T /E /G domain1\user1:F

n.b. This command is very useful for admins, but also very powerful.

Patrick

Sorry for not explaining my response completely. You mentioned in your
original question that your goal is to be able to modify the security on a
folder. You can use the Windows cacls.exe command-line tool to modify
security on a folder.

Nicolas, did you log-in local admin account on a computer and set parameters
for explorer??
If you would like to run explorer with domain\admin account, you need to log
on to a local computer with a domain\admin account, then go to Explorer
Tools - Folder Options - View and select 'Launch in separate process'.
Log off, login back like 'ordinary' user and then run-as explorer with
domain\admin account.
It must work! In my way it works without problems on WinXP Pro.

Miha

Nicolas,

You can try doing this using Internet Explorer instead of
explorer.exe.

[1] Right-click on Internet Explorer, and select runas from the
context
menu.
[2] Enter the credentials of the administrator or a user account
with
administrator privileges, and click OK.
[3] When Internet Explorer starts up, type in the path to the
parent of
the
folder you wish to modify as though you were using explorer.exe;
e.g.
"C:\Files"

You should now be able to modify the permissions.

Patrick

| You can't run explorer.exe using RunAs. I think you'll need to
log in
as

Nicolas, did you log-in local admin account on a computer and set parameters
for explorer??
If you would like to run explorer with domain\admin account, you need to log
on to a local computer with a domain\admin account, then go to Explorer
Tools - Folder Options - View and select 'Launch in separate process'.
Log off, login back like 'ordinary' user and then run-as explorer with
domain\admin account.
It must work! In my way it works without problems on WinXP Pro.

Miha

Nicolas,

Rather than using the file explorer GUI, it sounds like you should be
using
the Windows cacls.exe command-line tool. You can use runas to run
cacls.exe
under a different account. The following are some examples of using
cacls.exe:

[1] To see the help for this command:
cacls.exe /?

[2] To add full control to the user domain1\user1 for the folder
c:\Files:
cacls.exe c:\Files /T /E /G domain1\user1:F

n.b. This command is very useful for admins, but also very powerful.

Right, so organize your folder structure to ensure that it's a logical
hierarchy. I don't recommend having a shared folder with a bunch of
subfolders w/different permissions. Create different shares for different
departments/groups of users.

It is possible you may want XCACLS - & here's a GUI for it if you want -
http://www.sh-soft.com/front_content.php?idcat=19

But the bottom line is, you don't do this stuff from your desktop as a
user - do it on the server. You shouldn't need to be making changes to your
folder permissions so frequently that this causes problems.
