Run program (any EXE file) as a service

Could anyone tell me how to setup a program (any .exe file) to run as a service on Windows XP Professional?

I know it is done in the Registry but where?, also, is there anyway to select if it should be ran for a specific user or system?

You can use a product like Service+ from Nicoware.
(http://nicoware.net/software/products/serviceplus)

We are using it on our servers and workstations without any problems.
Can even run Java programs as a service.
