First, no update to XP from MS that I know of sets anything
to prompt for alternate credentials (use RunAs)
You should verify just exactly what is was that was downloaded
and installed. Are you sure it was something from Microsoft?

What is it that is being done when this prompting happens ??
If it is clicking on a shortcut, then you can go into the r-click
properties of the shortcut and deselect for it to use alternate
credentials.

Windows XP will often prompt you for that whenever a program that requires
administrator rights tries to run, and you currently don't have admin
rights. A patch from Microsoft would require admin rights.

The question then becomes: is Dad an admin?

Collin,

You may be correct that OP described a pop-up stating
admin rights are needed, but calling it a RunAs prompt.

I took OP to be saying this was downloaded and installed,
and now this new behavior is encountered.
