rules do not work when off line

Hi,
I am using outlook 2003 and my computer has a VPN connection to the office
and I am a user on the SBS2003 server with an exchange account alongside my
POP3 accounts within Outlook. However, I am not always connected to the
office (the VPN connection is only opened when it is needed). When I am not
connected to Exchange I can't add rules and alerts for my incoming emails.
How can I enable this option for all of my POP3 accounts that don't use
Exchange?

Since there is exactly one delivery location for a mix of Exchange and POP
accounts, if your delivery location is the Exchange server, your rules are
kept on the Exchange server and cannot be accessed unless you're connected
to the Exchange server. If your delivery location was a PST local to your
computer, then you could manipulate rules while offline, since the rules
would be local to your computer.
 
Thanks Brian, that would probably be the reason that I am also having a
regular problem with emails not being sent or received even though they are
supposed to be going via the POP3 accounts. So what do I need to do to
change my delivery location to PST local instead of the Exchange server.
Also will this not effect the shared calendars that I am using (public
folders, copied to favourites)

No, it will negatively affect your shared calendars, etc. The
recommendation is to use separate profiles in your situation - one for POP3
accounts, and one for your Exchange account.

I'd caution you against this because if you choose a PST as your delivery
location, all your Exchange folders will be emptied and moved into your PST.
If you use any other method of accessing your mail, like Outlook Web Access,
you son't be able to see it because it won't be on the server any more.

That's something I don't know, since I've never experimented, but I can
certainly imagine it will affect the ability of others to see your calendar.
What about using offline folders? If you enable that, you should be able to
use Outlook offline as though it were connected.
 
Yes I have the offline folders and calendars working by adding them to the
shared folder but of course the file isn't updated on the server until I go
online again. This is no problem for me but I am taking about an office here
and anything like that IS a problem for some of the other users I am afraid.
If it doesn't work constantly and automatically then the whole company comes
to a standstill!
