I know all about the fix BUT, the computer I am using is a customers machine
and I cannot get keyboard & mouse recognised until the machine fully reboots,
it cannot fully reboot because I have no way of selecting OK on the error
screen. If I installed the offending hard disk as a slave in another system
could I edit out this Microsoft induced error ?

Here's Hoping

Hi Mike,

Have you tried a hard boot? (shut down the computer using the power button,
and restart the computer) I'm not familiar with when the error appears ...
I'm assuming before you get to the desktop? You might try booting into Safe
Mode to get the keyboard / mouse to work, and then going into Normal Mode to
apply the patch.

Although I don't advise trying to fix things by slaving the drive, if the
above doesn't work, you could try to revert the user32.dll file back to an
earlier version. (search the drive for a previous version -- should be in
the C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB925902$ directory) Following what I see the
uninstall text for this update, you should delete all three user32.dll files
currently in use, and put the old on back in the system32 folder. If you do
this, keep a copy of the newer version somewhere, and once the keyboard /
mouse work, put this newer version back in place, then apply the patch.

Best Wishes,
Kurosh

HI Kurosh, thanks for your words of wisdon, I have tried the rebooting into
safe mode but that does not work, I will try your removing ddl's.

Thanks again
Mike

I need to better understand a fix for this. 1st of all, the error message is
basically this: "illegal system dll relocation. user32.dll was relocated in
memory. The application will not run properly. This occured because
c:/windows/system32/HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for windows
system dlls. The vendor supplying the dll should be contacted for a new dll."
All I can figure out so far is that HHCTRL.OCX is an active x control. I
don't know what vendor supplied it so I don't know who to contact. Is
there any wise person out there who can give a novice like me some easy
directions? thanks.

I'm guessing that the computer does not have PS/2 mouse and
keyboard ports. If that's correct, you might want to check the
BIOS and make sure that Legacy USB Support is enabled.

As far as Safe Mode, have you tried booting into Safe Mode with
Command Prompt. From there you could run System Restore,
%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe.

Good luck

Hi Nepatsfan
Yes you are correct they are both USB, I have checked the BIOS for Legacy
Support and that is selected, I am currently preparing a new HD for the
customer just in case I cannot get the new one working, I will try your
System Restore fix if I can get into Safe Mode, I did try earlier and could
not. Could you please detail your fix more clearly please

Thanks in anticipation

Mike

If you are unable to get into any of the Safe Mode options then
this won't help but here's more info on running System Restore
from a command prompt.

How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304449

Another option would be to run a repair installation after
backing up any important files.

Good luck

Hello again Nepatsfan

I have tried your fix running System Restore but when I run Safe Mode I have
no control of the cursor to select with command prompt, it then defaults to
load windows normally. Any other ideas please
Mike

Why don't you just uninstall the security update?

Hi Mike,

Looks like you're still struggling with this problem. Have you tried the
DLL fix I suggested? You need to slave the drive in order to do this, so you
can get a keyboard and mouse working. I imagine it will work, but you just
have to be careful and follow the steps I outlined.

Best Wishes,
Kurosh
