When I go to Start/Run/Services misc and locate RPC it is shown as started
in the status column and automatic in the Start-up type column, but when I
right click on it and Select Properties the Stop Button is inactive.

Also if I right click and select All Tasks, all the options are greyed out.

Is this as it should be??

Thanks Paul, but I thought that you were able to disable it as protection
against the Blaster virus?

Hi, Joe,

Do not attempt to disable it, you wouldn't like the results.

.The blaster virus enters through "messenger service"
(not to be confused with msn messenger)which can be shut
down easy through admin tools> services, the xp firewall,a
third party firewall,an anti-virus program or the
microsoft patch all stop the blaster.

No, it does not.

The worm exploits the rpc dcom service (tcp port 135) and tftp service (udp
port 69). It has absolutely nothing to do with the messenger service. Read
up on the vulnerabiity here:

The cures you mention are correct, though an av tool is sort of pointless if
you don't install the patch or enable a firewall (if you don't you will just
get reinfected).

As to the RPC service, it should not be disabled, just set to react
differently. Disabling it will cause more problems than the average use will
be able to deal with. Read up on this correctly from MVP Kelly:
