rpc system shutdown

We're having the same problem as everyone else, how do we
solve it?

As soon as you can!

Also enable Windows XP's built in firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;283673

Then go to WindowsUpdate to pick up the latest updates:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

shuts down too quickly. Any recommendations?

Once you see the NT Authority garbage click Start -> Run..
cmd.exe
shutdown -a
Then finish applying the patches
