HELP, I'm so tired of this problem. I have done everything everyone has recommended to fix this problem, only to run into bigger problems. I have done the scans, deleted all virus, uncluding the blaster worm tried to edit the registry only to find the regedit to close itself. I recently took the plunge formatted the drive and started all over. After loading the operating system I tried to load the service pack from a CD to keep from going back on the internet. It wouldn't load. Then I tried loading the virus protection software Mcafee 8.0 and it wouldn't load. I went to the regedit to see if I could find a problem there and it closed on me. I did a virus scan and found two viruses and deleted. This all happened while I was offline. I have not setup my network card yet and did not have a cable plugged into the card. To top it off a few minutes later I got the message that the NT admin has involked the RPC shut down. How could this be happening?

I would suggest starting over from scratch and perform the installation
of Windows XP correctly:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

Thanks for the reply. What you described is exactly what I did last night, but I still have the same problem.
