My computer is consistently giving me an error saying
that RPC protocol needs to preform a shutdown. The
dialog box starts a countdown then shuts down and
restarts my computer. This just started happening. I
need a fix.

Apparently, your computer has an unwelcome visitor (VIRUS) known
as the WM32 Blaster/Lovsan WORM. It only takes a split second for
this WORM to infect your computer if a firewall is not enabled and you
have an active internet connection.

It entered the computer through the internet connection because the "firewall"
was not properly enabled and essential critical updates were not installed from
the Windows Update website. For instructions on fixing the problem, visit:

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
This opens the Command Prompt window.

Then type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:

.

You my friend have the blaster worm, i cant remember what
i did exactly but you can download a tool from symantec
that gets rid of the blaster. or contact microsoft and
they can help you

I have a similar shutdown problem with XP (brand new DELL
desktop), the message is "System Shutdown initiated by NT
AUTHORITY/SYSTEM. Windows must restart because the Remote
Procedure Call (RPC) terminated unexpectedly". Both DELL
support and my ISP support insisted that the computer had
been infected by the Blaster Worm. I have done the
following: enabled XP Firewall - this has stopped the
system shutting down unexpectedly when connected to the
internet. I downloaded all the critical updates from
Microsoft Windows Update. I downloaded and ran the
Blaster Worm virus removal tool from the Symantec
website. The tool reported that my computer did not have
the Blaster Worm virus. I have also run LiveUpdate to
update the virus definitions in NAV.
Note - prior to enabling XP Firewall, I had installed
ZoneAlarm Pro firewall. This shutdown problem started
just after I unistalled ZoneAlarm Pro, because I was
trying to get a solution to why I couldn't download my
emails in MS Outlook (error 0x800ccc0F). This has since
been resolved and the problem was actually NAV email
scanning preventing the download. By the way - no thanks
to DELL support or my ISP support for solving this.
Totally useless, they had no idea. A friend pointed me to
support.microsoft.com where I found the answer.

Any suggestions about the system shutdown?
