I have the same problem as Evan and Jen, But I have no taskbar to select
start and halt the shutdown process. I got dinged when switching from Norton
to EZ trust.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I don't know who Evan and Jen are or what you have already done to
troubleshoot. Scan with either Sysclean (first link below) or Dave
Lipman's Multi-AV.

As you haven't provided any specific details or error messages,
the following is the result of having to guess what your problem might
be.

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
enabled a firewall, without having first installed an antivirus
application with current virus definition files, and before installing
the KB828471 Hotfix, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.

OK,seeing neither of you noticed that I have no taskbar, hence no start, I
will try again. I am getting the "RPC service terminated unexpectedly by the
NT Authority" error and shutdown 1-2 minutes into sign-on. I have no way to
do anything because I have no taskbar/start available to me.

I had Norton running for the past 3 years, with auto update on. I also had
XP sp2 with auto updates on. When I went to switch from Norton to EZtrust,
Norton was about to expire and I use EZ on my main computer as it doesn't bog
the internet down like Norton, I got wacked during the installation process.
Did I check the XP firewall to see if it was on, no, 'my bad'. Now I need
something that works from a Clean Booted C> to fix the problem. Any thoughts?

Thanks

If you can run Task Manager, you can run programs. You don't need the
Taskbar or Start Button. Ctrl-Alt-Del and choose New Task and run
shutdown -a like Bruce told you and then either Sysclean or Multi-AV
like I told you.

If you find this difficult - and it can be a bit difficult to run
programs from Task Manager and a command line instead of using the
familiar graphical interface - or if the virus has also disabled Task
Manager - take the machine to a professional computer repair shop.
There is no shame in doing so.

The alternative would be for you to build a Bart's PE or an ERD
Commander (very expensive software) and include one of the first-line
antivirus tools mentioned on it.

Beside what Malke indicates...

If you disconnect the PC from the Internet, do you still get the following ...

NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service terminated
unexpectedly.

And what happens if you press <Winkey>+<R>? Does not the "Run" dialog
come up, allowing you to enter the Shutdown abbort command? One doesn't
need the task bar or Start button to enter commands.
