RPC Dcom error and shutdown

we are currently running symantec corporate editon 9.0 with updates and virus
definitions being current and running scans daily. Service Pack 2 is not
loaded, but all other updates are current on this machine. We have run the
Blaster removal tool and Welchia and a few others, all of which have come up
clean. What is happening is an error stating "Windows must restart because
the Remote Procedure Call Service terminated unexpectedly" I have read
through many other forums and made the above assumptions and tried all of
those. The only thing that works is to disconnect the pc from the network to
keep it running. I have gone to the run command typed in " shutdown -a" and
the computer will keep running but with limited use. When we did do virus
scans we did stop the system restore service and run the scan. Does anyone
have any other recommendations short of reloading this pc. This came up on
three pc's on a 35 workstation network. Help anyone??

I've also had 3 systems come down with this problem in the last week on
my network. We have about a dozen computers with XP-SP1 and 80 with
XP-SP2, and this problem has only been on the SP1 systems. My solution
is to disconnect them from the network and install SP2. This has
worked so far. Strange problem for sure...

Mike,

That is the only way I have been able to fix it, load xp sp2 ( even knowing
it's causing some problems with other apps now). That seems to fix it for me
also, but sure would love to know if it's a new variant of something from the
past. Thanks for the info.

Frank,
I've only been able to determine at this point that you and I are not
the only people experiencing this. ;) Fortunately we don't have any
reasons not to go to SP2, and have been migrating everyone there this
year.
