Ijust installed a router. The manufacterer claims it has an effective
firewall and that there might be conflicts with Zone-Alarm. Does anyone
think I should uninstall zone alarm? Thanks

I can't say for sure about a conflict with Zone Alarm, but I can tell you
that I have a Linksys Router installed and have for years. I've never had
any kind of problem with any security issues. I've run some of the various
tests from sites that say they can test your firewall and have passed each
one.

I know Zone Alarm would be just an extra layer of protection, but
personally, I'd prefer to use my system resources for other things, since
I'm convinced that extra layer isn't necessary.

What router do you have.
And all you would need the software for now, would be to
stop programs( Trojans and such) from accessing the
internet that are either already on your computer, or
that may be loaded in the future.
The NAT feature of the router, combined with whatever
firewall the put in your router should do the rest for
you. Keeping people out.

Good luck.

Greetings --

However, even good hardware firewalls do nothing to protect the
user from him/herself. Almost all spyware and many Trojans and worms
are downloaded and installed deliberately (albeit unknowingly) by the
user. So a software firewall, such as ZoneAlarm, that can detect and
warn the user of unauthorized out-going traffic is an important
element of protecting one's privacy and security.

I use both a router with NAT and Norton Personal Firewall, and
have not conflicts between them.

It may be a UPnP router.
You can read more about UPnP at www.upnp.org/download/UPnPDA10_20000613.htm
Why not just try it?

Otherwise it should not be a problem.
I run ZA free behind my non-UPnP router w/o problems.

One advantage of a software firewall, such as ZoneAlarm, besides stopping
people from getting in, is to prevent rogue software from "dialing" out.
This can happen from spyware or viruses of different types.

Although the NAT translation in the router may "sort of" act like a
firewall, it's technically not a real one. Because of that, I've been told
that a hacker could still get through. So, if you have sensitive data on
your machine, I believe that it doesn't hurt to have a software firewall
running behind the router.
