I have a Linksys router, with two machines connected to it. My company's
computer consultant has helped me configuer the two "channels" in ways I
don't want to disturb. There are two unused outputs on the router. I'm
working on reformatting/reinstalling OS/other stuff on a friend's machine,
and various MS downloads could be happening while I'm doing other stuff, but
so far, I've been waiting for the end of the day so I can run her machine
directly to the separate DSL modem. Obviously, that shuts down my two work
machines.

I suppose I could just try plugging the friend's machine into one of the
unused router outputs, but I'll ask first: Should there be a way to
configure the router so one of its outputs appears to the computer as simply
a straight-through connection to the modem? I don't want to do ANYTHING to
her machine that is particular to the router, so when she gets it back,
it'll work with her DSL modem.

As long as the NIC on your friends computer is using DHCP to obtain an
address there should not be any issues. Plug it into one of the used ports on
the router and then see if you can access the Internet from it. You should be
able to...... if not it is not getting an address from the router...... What
is teh O/S of the problem computer?

Haven't tried it yet. I know it sounds like a simple, harmless thing to try,
but this computer in question has been a nightmare to work on. But...I'll
try that in a few & let you know.
