What would cause a rom door not to open. Os is windows xp home edition.

1. Defective drive.
2. Disk jammed inside the drive.
3. Drive is "in use", or at least Windows thinks it is.
4. System is busy with other tasks and is not responding immediately.

Try starting the computer up but not booting into Windows. You can do
this by:
- going into the BIOS setup.
- booting, or attempting to boot, from a bootable CD or from a 3.5
diskette.

Then see if the drive door will open. If not then it is a hardware
problem (defective or jammed, loose cable, etc.). If it does open
okay but there are still problems in opening it after booting into
Windows then something in your Windows configuration or a background
program is interfering in some way.

Post the results back here and we will proceed further.

Good luck

In addittion to what Ron said. You can always turn off the computer, and grab
a paper clip. Open it out so that you have a straight end. then when the
computer is off, put in the little hole on the ROM drive (usually right under
the actual tray). Is if it'll open. Make sure it's off though, cause if it's
on it'll resist to open. In an off statue, a lil push should get it open
enough to pull out & see if there is any damage physically...somewhat
