Role Based and ADO.NET

Hello,
I have this question:
Where Enterprise Services (ES) can offer secure model (at a cost of
added comlexity) can one this achieve this purely using ADO.NET?
if no, how does this one simulate the Role Based Security if we dont
want to go the ES?
