My table of contents is aligned left, so that the headings line up exactly.
But, page numbers on the right side of the page are out of alignment by
fractions of a character. Any ideas?

Maybe the tab stop at the right side is a left tab instead of a right
tab? Or you're using a fancy font in which numbers don't all have the
same width?

I am no Word expert by any means, but I have solved this problem
occasionally by using periods between the name of the chapter and the number
of the chapter.

Like this:

13th Day........26
Go or No Go...32
Last Chance...45

By default, the TOC styles have a period leader. Misalignment of the page
numbers suggests a problem with the tab stop setting for one TOC level or
another.
