My father in law's XPSP2 has a minor problem in that when you right click on
an icon on the desktop that is NOT a folder in order to bring up the context
menu, it crashes. Eg, Dr. Watson comes on and tells you that you have a
problem and it resets and starts again. If you right click on a FOLDER on
the desktop, the menu comes up normally. I can right click on My Computer no
problems but cant right click on any file there.

I cannot find out why this is happening though it appears on searching the
web that it is a known problem. The answers given to install the latest
video driver and fix the "target.dll" problem didn't fix his problem. I have
tried a USB mouse and a normal PS/2 mouse and it is the same thing. I have
installed XP on top of XP and the same thing. Transferred everything to
another HD and the same thing. Uninstalled his Mcafee Virusscan and
reinstalled it and the same thing. Uninstalled his Intellimouse program and
still the same thing.

Anyone got any tips on how to fix this please?

Thanks but it has nothing to do with spyware. It is a context menu addition
that stuffs things up. That much, at least, is clear from the fact that it
crashes only on files.
