Been following threads on this problem. Posted a few days ago but must have
missed the replies.
A right click on my desktop (to bring up properties) freezes, need
ctl/alt/delete to close and reboot.
It is the problem with KB908531.
I downloaded the HP_fix mentioned here and also a Web share fix mentioned on
another group. Both added entry's to my register but did nothing to fix the
problem.
The only solution, I have found, is uninstall 908531.
My auto update continues to want me to reinstall it. It is getting annoying.
I now get messages every 5 min telling me to restart so it can be installed.
How can I keep this "update" from constantly being downloaded?

Hi calhoun,

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

I'd set it to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them".

Microsoft will issue a revised version of this update on 25th April '06. The
new update will add nVidia shell extensions to the allow list.

According to the revised Security Bulletin MS06-015
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS06-015.mspx
MS will release an revised version of KB908531 (MS06-015) on
April 25th. For details please see the FAQ section of the bulletin.

FWIW,

If the problem continues after installing the update, type this in Start,
Run:

REG EXPORT "HKCR\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers"
C:\shellext.txt

Then open C:\shellext.txt using Notepad, and post the contents in your
reply.
