Whenever I right click on desktop icon, the mouse pointer
freezes and I have to reboot or log off.

I am using windows xp.

Do you have special mouse? If so try reinstalling he drivers for it. Or
this could be related to video. Try updating your video drivers. Another
thing to try is to decrease the hardware acceleration. Go to Display
Properties->Setting Tab->Advanced button->Troubleshoot Tab and slide the
pointer back a couple of notches.

Hi there,

I have XP professional installed on my PC and since 2 -3 week I have a problem that the desktop freezes when I leave my PC on for some time without any activity. I have to logout or restart by clicking Ctrl + Alt + Del. It seems like the computer doesn't hang but the desktop doesn't respond anymore to mouse click.

What could be the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Hibernation settings maybe .. On desktop right click, select Properties -
Screen Saver - Power ...

Hibernation may also need a setting change in the BIOS. How you change that
depends on what specific computer you run, but a good start is to hold esc
button or del at some point during the start sequence, before Windows loads.
