retrieve values from several cells into one cell

hi all,
i have an excel work sheet with several hundrads of names,
in one columm all the family names and in the second all
the first names, i would like to retrive into one cell
from the columm with the first name all the letters (no
more than 8)and from the family columm only two letters,
for example:
lets say that in columm A1 the first name is: Jonathan
lets say that in columm B1 the family name is: Lerner
i would like to use a function that will take the first
name plus 2 letters from the family name so i would get in
cell C1: JonathanLe

=LEFT(A1,8)&LEFT(B1,2)

And drag down to copy as needed.
