Did that "tech" make a backup first (they should have), or do you have
one (you should have)? Depending on how they "restored" your system,
the data may be gone.

You could try doing a start > run: %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Then, select the "Restore my computer" option and see if there is a more
recent restore point that you can try reverting to.

Though, you'd probably be better off talking to the actual tech who
restored it to such an old point, to see what if anything can be done based
on their method of reversion.

Talk to that "tech"! He shouldn't have done such a thing without notifying
you beforehand and making certain you had backups. Did he? DO you have
backups?
If he just went ahead and did it without telling you, it would also be
worth your time to check to see if the XP operating system you have has been
pirated! It's entirely possible with some of those so called "techs" that
operate nowadays.
If you don't know how to do that, you can always go to windows update and
choose the CUSTOM install, and select something small to download. It'll
test to see if it objects to your OS. Do not install the file; just
download it. Then delete that update it if it works. IF IT COMPLAINS, GET
A FIRM GRIP ON THAT TECH'S NECK! Well, assuming it worked OK in the first
place. If you pirated in the first place, all bets are off.
You also might want to check the Service Pack status before the next
round of updates occurs. It should be the same as when you gave it to him,
usually with SP2 + hotfixes.

At least then you'll know your keycode works and if it does, you're in
decent shape.

System restore only keeps restore points to a maximum of 90 days, so it's
unlikely that was used to restore to 2004. It is unclear though what
exactly happened, or how the system was restored.

How exactly did this tech restore to a specific date, in this case you
specified 2004? What kind of restore? At this point, though, until we get
a better idea of what happened, stop using the system. Any attempt to
recover data is less successful the more the system is used.

What files are missing?

Here are a couple of file recovery utilities. Download them from another
computer. Install the drive as a slave drive in another computer. The
safest thing to do is image the drive to an external hard drive so you have
a copy of the original drive, then attempt data recovery by running the
recovery utilities from that other computer.

If the data is extremely valuable and these utilities don't help, another
expensive option is to send the drive to one of the data recover
specialists:

I interpret your post as the tech used a restore CD to restore your
PC/laptop as it was when new. This wipes out all on the hard drive during
the process.

I also interpret this as having nothing to do with windows XP system
restore.

If both are true, your personal data is gone.
