I have several ZIP disks with .QIC backup files created
with Windows 98. I need access to the these files but am
now running on a Windows XP machine. The old 98 machine
is DOA & pushing up daisies in the "old PC graveyard".

Is there a utility to open or restore the .QIC files to a
Win Xp computer? The NTBackup utility claims it cannot
read the .QIC files but is there a workaround??

No workaround for ntbackup. Either restore them on another 98 system
and copy the data by CD/DVD or other method, or get a backup program
that can read those qic files. I have heard that Stompsoft's Backup
MyPC can. There should be others.

Not with that. But I understand that the demo version of BackUP MY PC
from www.stompinc.com will read them
