I HAVE SOMEHOW LOST THE FILE " MSCDEX.EXE ", THE CD ROM extension utility. I have tried in the past to boot from the XP disc and then repair my OS. But when I press "R" to repair the partition in question, the program proceeds to write over my existing files and create a clean partition. ANy ideas out there?

To repair or replace damaged or missing files, try Start>Run. Type "sfc
/scannow" (no quotes, note the space between c and /). Have your XP disk at
hand. You will have to run MS Updates after you have finished.
