is it possible to restore deleted files? as in they're already emptied out
from the recycle bin. i've seen those documentaries and news about people who
had been victims of identitiy theft because they sold their computer without
erasing the data... i want to restore this one big report i did half a year
ago, but i had erased it because i re-formatted my drive. please give
feedback.

Yes there is software that will recover deleted files. However if you
deleted the report a year and a half ago, and have also reformatted the
drive, it is likely now unrecoverable. Deleted files will eventually become
overwritten and thus unrecoverable in any useable format. Use the demo of
this app and see what's there http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecoverylite/
or try this freeware program as see if you can find your file

There are companies that specialize in data recovery but unless you are in
the mid to high six figure income category, you can't afford their services.

Actually, professional data recovery firms' services are not so
expensive that they are out of reach of ordinary people. Drive Savers
starts at around $500-800 for routine retrievals. Yes, this isn't
walking around money for me and I certainly don't have the "6-figure
income", but if I had a business or some irreplaceable pictures were
involved, $500-800 would be doable and worth it. Of course the price
can go much higher if the hard drive was at the bottom of the Amazon
River (an actual case and Drive Savers retrieved all the data!). BTW, I
don't work for them - I just think they're tops at what they do.

That said, unless the report is needed for a really pressing reason like
a lawsuit, forget about it. It's gone. If it is retrievable (and you
would need to send it to someone like DS or another company
specializing in forensic recovery), then this is one of those times
that it will cost the earth.

In theory yes. In practice perhaps. It all depends on how long you've
been using the pc in question after you've discovered that you need the
files back.
